This sculpture is inspired by Chac Mool, a Mayan statue at Chichen Itza. It represents fear of death and is usually positioned in front of a long tunnel symbolizing the journey into the after life. The figure is lying down and is reminiscent of a lounge chair. The contrast of a fearful figure reclining is disquieting but also comforting. I had this idea over 15 years ago and have seen other artists explore this idea since then. As I have begun to make art, I started at the beginning in terms of images that impress me. Since I was a child I have been highly influenced by Mayan architecture and art. I want to experiment more with surface finish to continue the idea of 'ancient meets present.' If you are interested in this sculpture or something similar contact me. This piece will soon be on display at San Juan Sculpture Park on San Juan Island.

16 gauge mild steel sheet, welded with .035 wire. 23”X16X 12." Light grinding, no surface finish. Fabricated and welded by the artist.
