16 gauge mild steel sheet, welded with .035 wire. 23”X16X 12." Light grinding, no surface finish. This sculpture is inspired by Chac Mool, a Mayan statue at Chichen Itza. It represents fear of death and is usually positioned in front of a long tunnel symbolizing the journey into the after life. The figure is lying down and is reminiscent of a lounge chair. The contrast of a fearful figure reclining is very moving to me. I would like to explore the form of lounge chair style furniture fabricated into art in any theme or colour. I had this idea over 15 years ago and have seen other artists explore this idea since then. As I have begun to make art, I started at the beginning in terms of images that impress me. Since I was a child I have been highly influenced by Mayan architecture and art. I want to experiment more with surface finish to continue the idea of 'ancient meets present.'
